“My parents told me not to get too involved in college activities. Never get involved with other North Korean defectors or get married to them. It will get you into trouble,” said Kim Mi-ran, a junior at Korea University.
There was a meeting of students who defected from North Korea and South Korean students at Korea University with the theme of “North Korean Party: Moon under Pyeongyang,” organized by the fraternity “Libertas.”
But most of the topics of discussions about the real livelihoods of young North Korean defectors.
Sohn Gi-cheol, a 24-year-old fourth-year law student, said he hid the fact that he was from North Korea while going out with his girlfriend for more than a year. “It was better to tell her that I was of the Korean descent. The reality is that it is difficult to enter into marriage if it becomes known that I am a North Korean defector.”
