Ethnic Korean-Chinese man held for allegedly killing S. Korean

Listen

An ethnic Korean-Chinese man was placed under detention Saturday on suspicions that he killed a man in a fit of temper during a quarrel, police said.

Police said the 26-year-old is suspected of stabbing the Korean man with a knife outside a restaurant in Osan, a city 55 kilometers south of Seoul, around 10:20 a.m., said Yoo Bo-kuk, a police officer in charge of the case.

The suspect, identified only by his family name Jo, told police investigators that he was angered by what he claims was a "dirty look" the 32-year-old South Korean man gave him in the restaurant, Yoo said.

The ethnic Korean from China, who works at a factory near Osan, was eating and drinking with his co-workers in the restaurant after night-shift work, he said.

About two and a half hours after the incident, police nabbed the suspect who was hiding at an acquaintance's house, the officer said, adding that a formal arrest warrant will be sought against him on Sunday.

More than 471,300 Chinese of Korean descent stayed in South Korea as of March this year, mostly for temporary manual jobs, according to data compiled by the Justice Ministry. (Yonhap)
