More than 11,000 people have been detained for crimes related to resident registration numbers over the past four and a half years, police data showed Thursday.

A total of 11,428 people were arrested between 2008 and August of this year for violating the Residents Registration Law, such as illegally using other people's identification cards, creating bogus 13-digit resident registration numbers or falsely reporting to authorities regarding identification cards, according to the data by the National Police Agency.

The data submitted to Rep. Chin Young of the ruling Saenuri Party indicated that the number of those violating the law has risen steadily from 1,821 in 2008 to 2,924 in 2011.

"Crimes abusing other people's personal identification numbers have been on the rise," Rep. Chin said in a release. "Law enforcement authorities should more actively come up with countermeasures to prevent similar crimes." (Yonhap)
