Women make up majority of school teachers: data

Listen

Nearly 70 percent of the country's primary and secondary school teachers are women, while those in high-ranking school posts are dominated by men, data showed Tuesday.

According to the data compiled by the education ministry and submitted to Rep. Min Byung-joo of the ruling Saenuri Party, 64.9 percent of the country's primary and secondary school teachers, or 275,922, are female.

In primary schools, in particular, female teachers accounted for 76.2 percent, with 67.3 percent in middle schools and 47.3 percent in high schools, the data showed.

Across the nation, two elementary schools have no male teachers, and six other schools have one male teacher each, it showed.

The trend is in stark contrast among high-ranking positions, as only 15.5 percent of school principals are female, according to the data.

"The country should correct the gender imbalance among school teachers to provide proper guidance to students and to prevent the feminization of male students," Rep. Min said.

There has been a consistent call to increase the number of male teachers, especially as the country grapples with a marked increase in reported bullying among students. (Yonhap)
