Some 30 million people will head to their hometowns for the Chuseok holiday that runs from Saturday through Monday, officials said Friday.
Heavy traffic jams started at major expressways across the nation Friday night, and are expected to continue until Saturday afternoon.
The transportation authorities said it may take nine hours from Seoul to Busan, longer than last year, because most people plan to take to the road Saturday.
The authorities forecast that the traffic on roads to Seoul may not be too heavy.
While rain is expected in some regions, the sky will be clear, or slightly cloudy, on the official day of Chuseok, Sunday, and people may able to see the full moon across the country, according to the Korean Meteorological Administration.
