Over half of couples divorced because of money problems: survey

Listen

About 62.1 percent of men and 57.2 percent of women said that financial matters affected their divorce, according to a recent survey.

In the survey of 528 divorced men and women, 42.7 percent of male respondents said they thought their ex-wives gave them a small amount of pocket money to prevent them from spending excessively.

Some 37.3 percent and 10.7 percent of males surveyed said former wives did not give them a large sum of pocket money because of distrust and to prevent reckless investment.

The poll was jointly conducted by remarriage agency Only-You (www.ionlyyou.co.kr) and marriage agency Bien Aller (www.bien.co.kr) between Aug. 30 and Sept. 5 via email and online.

It found that 34.2 percent of female respondents said they thought their ex-husbands did not give them “enough” money for living.

Some 27.2 percent and 20.6 percent said they thought former partners did not give them enough money for living to prevent overspending and because of a lack of income.

Sohn Dong-kyu, a senior official of Only-You, said husbands, who play the role of the main income source in a household, tend to try to take advantage of their salaries to show off their status at home.

Many wives appear uncomfortable with such an attitude, Sohn said. On the other hand, he said, many husbands respond positively to wives giving them a small sum of pocket money which comes from salaries.
