Rep. Moon Jae-in of the main opposition Democratic United Party (DUP) won his eighth straight victory in the Gwangju primary, Thursday.
In the race, Moon garnered 33,909 votes, or 48.4 percent, of the 69,972 votes cast. Sohn Hak-kyu, the former DUP chairman, came in second with 32.3 percent followed by Kim Doo-kwan, former South Gyeongsang Province Governor, and Rep. Chung Sye-kyun.
In all, Moon led the race with support of 46.8 percent of all votes cast with Sohn trailing by 25.9 percent.
The DUP is slated to announce the final winner of its presidential primary on Sept. 16. A run-off election is to take place if no candidate receives more than 50 percent of all votes cast.
