12 new ambassadors, 5 consuls general appointed

Korea has appointed a former first vice foreign minister, Park Suk-hwan, as its new envoy to Britain in a routine diplomatic reorganization that affects 11 other countries and replaces five consuls general, the foreign ministry said.

Lee Joon-gyu, who served as head of the ministry-affiliated Institute of Foreign Affairs and National Security, was named ambassador to India and former deputy foreign minister Kim Jae-shin was appointed to head the embassy in Germany, the ministry said in a statement.

Lee Hyuk, former chief of the ministry's planning and coordination division, was appointed as ambassador to the Philippines, replacing Lee Hye-min, who will move to become ambassador to France.

The other countries to which new ambassadors have been appointed include Azerbaijan, Iran, Libya and Rwanda.

The announcement came after the host nations gave diplomatic consent to the proposed appointments.

The reshuffle will also see the replacement of five consuls general in Kobe, New York, Mumbai, Irkutsk and Istanbul, according to the statement. (Yonhap)
