Korea will promote its environment-friendly policies at the World Conservation Congress (WCC) on Jeju Island from Sept. 6 to 15, the top official of the organizing official said Thursday.
Lee Hong-koo, chairman of the committee said that the country will hit green targets with the introduction of smart and eco-friendly technologies.
“This conference will be remembered as the one that successfully understood the environment-friendly concepts,” Lee said during the press conference with a little more than 60 days remaining until the meeting takes place.
The WCC is a quadrennial event governed by the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN), a non-governmental organization (NGO). The IUCN seeks to boost use of sustainable energy, the well-being of the people, and a green economy at the Jeju conference.
This year’s conference co-hosted by the Ministry of Environment, Jeju Special Self-Governing Province will attract more than 3,000 delegates including government officials and NGO members from 140 countries. An eco-friendly lifestyle will be practiced and demonstrated throughout the 10-day talks.
“We will adopt solar panels, an automatic temperature control system, and energy-efficient elevators at the Jeju Convention Center where the conference will be held,” Lee said. “Also by using tablet PCs and other electronic reading devices we will minimize the use of paper at the conference.”
Outside the convention center, electricity-powered shuttle buses and hybrid cars will transport delegates to their accommodation. Bicycle rentals will be available for those staying close to the convention center.
