A former speaker of the National Assembly on Monday received an eight-month suspended jail sentence for giving money to a fellow party lawmaker before being elected as party chairman in 2008.

Park Hee-tae, who resigned in February over the bribery allegations, was accused of ordering his aides to give an envelope stuffed with 3 million won ($2,583) to the ruling party lawmaker ahead of the July party convention in 2008. Park was elected as party chief during the convention.

The Seoul Central District Court decided to suspend the sentence for two years.

Park became the nation's first parliamentary speaker who quit the post over bribery allegations.
