The Seoul Metropolitan Government said Thursday it will push for revising regulations to toughen disciplinary measures against its officials caught for drunk driving and sexual offenses.

Under the proposed revision, the government introduced a "three strikes, you're out" policy, where an official whose driver's license is revoked or suspended for drunk driving three times will face expulsion.

The officials whose duties are related to driving will be dismissed for a second offense, the city government added.

The municipal government also decided to toughen its clampdown on sexual offenders, categorizing such crimes as illegal acts subjected to stern punishments.

"The toughened measures aim to take up the slack among our officials to better serve the public," the city government said.

Under Korean law, public officials convicted of driving under the influence face correspondent punishments in violation of their duty to maintain dignity. (Yonhap)
