Female worker files complaints about sexual harassment

Listen

A 45-year-old woman, who worked at a subcontractor of Hyundai Motor’s plant in Asan, South Chungcheong Province, for 14 years has filed with the nation’s human rights commission complaints claiming that she was sexually harassed by two officials of the subcontractor.

The National Human Rights Commission of Korea acknowledged the harassment and recommended the subcontractor to compensate the woman. But the company sacked her. And then it closed business, changed its name and reemployed other workers.

In the complaints, the woman, identified only by her family name Kim, argued that she has suffered mental disease because of the sexual harassment at the workplace.

In addition, she insisted that she suffered another harassment when he underwent “improper” questioning at the Korea Workers’ Compensation and Welfare Service (KWCWS).

She said that a male official of the KWCWS asked her, “I knew that you filed with authorities a divorce suit. What’s going on?” “Did you have problems with your children?” “Could you reenact sexual harassment?” and “As I know all about you, you should tell me about them right now.”

The metal union affiliated with the Korean Confederation of Trade Unions said, “The petitioner continued to complain about sexual harassment and mental sufferings resulting from unlawful dismissal. But these complaints were deleted from the documents submitted to human rights commission and questioning centered on the petitioner’s family background and whether she had disciplinary records.”

A KWCWS official said, “A regional branch office investigated the case. We have yet to receive a report on the investigation results from the regional office.”
