Record-breaking loss of glacier likely in the Arctic this year

Continuous global warming may melt more glacier in the Arctic rapidly, a research revealed.

The Korean Meteorological Administration has reported that the amount of glacier in the Arctic is about 614,000 square kilometers as of the second week of August, 490,000 square kilometers less than the average. The reduced glacier is more than twice the Korean Peninsula.

“The degree of surface roughness of the glaciers has dramatically dropped since the middle of July,” an official from the Korean National Institute of Meteorological Research said. “The area of glaciers this September will be the smaller than ever before.”

“It is highly probable that biting cold will sweep the whole country this winter due to the decrease of the sea ice,” a senior researcher from the Korea Polar Research Institute said.
