President Lee Myung-bak congratulated U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-moon on his reelection to another five-year term in a telephone conversation Wednesday, Cheong Wa Dae said.
“I believe the U.N. gave you the mandate in recognition of what you have done as the U.N. chief in a sincere and humble manner,” Lee told Ban, according to presidential spokesman Park Jeong-ha.
“All Korean people, including me, are happy about your achievement. I’m proud of the fact that all leaders of countries around the world showed firm support for your leadership.”
In response, Ban, a former South Korean foreign minister, expressed gratitude for all the support and encouragement from Korean people.
“There is an assessment that I played a role in upgrading Korea’s international status. It is a great compliment for me,” the 67-year-old said.
Ban, who was inaugurated in 2007 as the first Asian U.N. chief, won his uncontested, unanimous reelection at the U.N. General Assembly Tuesday. His second term will begin on Jan. 1.
Lee has frequently met with Ban on the sidelines of international gatherings to seek his advice on North Korea, climate change and other global issues. The North also backed his reelection.
Cheong Wa Dae said President Lee sent thank-you letters to the leaders of all 15 U.N. Security Council member nations for supporting Ban.
“As President of Ban’s native country, I express gratitude for providing active support for his reelection,” Lee said in the letter, according to the spokesman.
“South Korea, as a U.N. member, will work actively together with your nation to realize the ideals and goals of the United Nations.”
