NK makes large profit from counterfeit greenback

It has been reported that North Korea earns a profit of several hundred billion won every year through counterfeit greenback and cigarettes.

This estimate comes from the U.S. Treasury Department’s investigation of money laundering allegations of the Banco Delta Asia bank back in 2005, reported Radio Free Asia—a private, nonprofit corporation that operates a radio station and Internet news service—on Monday. The final report calculates that the communist country made up to 546 billion won by circulating fake money and cigarettes.

The smuggling of drugs also brings about 100 to 200 billion won in illegal earnings.

The U.S. has enforced a massive financial regulation based on these numbers. They are currently imposing 17 economic sanctions against North Korea in order to stop the widespread sales of weapons of mass destruction and human rights violations related to human trafficking cases.

북한, 위조지폐로 연간 수천억원 벌여들였다

북한이 위조지폐와 가짜 담배 제조를 통해 벌어들인 돈이 매년 수천억원에 달하는 것으로 추정된다.

16일 자유아시아방송에 따르면 이 같은 추정치는 미국 재무부가 지난 2005년 방코 델타 아시아 은행의 돈세탁 혐의를 조사하면서 산출한 것이다. 조사결과 보고서는 북한이 위조지폐와 가짜 담배를 통해 벌어들인 돈의 규모가 5억 달러(약 5458억원)에 이른다고 추정했다.

보고서에 따르면 북한은 위조지폐와 가짜 담배 외에도 마약 밀수를 통해 연간 1억~2억 달러(약 1000억~2000억원) 가량을 벌어들였다. 이를 근거로 미국은 지난 2005년 방코 델타 아시아에 대한 대대적인 금융규제에 착수했다.

보 고서는 위폐 제조와 유통, 돈세탁 외에도 대량살상무기 확산, 인권 유린 등 북한의 위법 행위에 따른 대북 경제 제재를 규정한 법률 17개가 현재 시행 중이라고 밝혔다. 미국 행정부는 애국법, 이란•북한•시리아 비확산법과 수출 통제법, 인신매매 금지법 등을 근거로 사안별로 북한에 대한 경제제재를 가하고 있다.
