China developing J-18 vertical take-off, landing fighter

China has reportedly completed test flights of a vertical takeoff and landing fighter surpassing the capabilities of its stealth jet.

The state-run CCTV reported that China has been developing a short-takeoff and vertical landing naval fighter optimized for small aircraft carriers.

Equipped with stealth functions, the J-18 weighs 12,430kg and has a range of 2,000km, CCTV said, citing a report by Defense News.

The CCTV report came amid a series of reports on new weapons development by Chinese media.

The Global Times, a sister paper of the People’s Daily, also carried the photo of the J-18 circulated on the Internet in its April 25 edition.

The Times reported on April 17 that China conducted second flight test of its J-20 stealth fighter at an air field of the Aircraft Design Research Institute in Chengdu, capital of Sichuan Province.

On April 6, Xinhua news agency disclosed 20 photos on the Varyag aircraft carrier being remodeled at a Dalian shipyard in Liaoning Province on its website.

Xinhua reported that China has nearly completed remodeling of the Varyag, an unfinished Soviet aircraft carrier, which was imported from Ukraine in 1998. It added that Beijing is expected to realize its dream of having an aircraft carrier soon.

중국이 스텔스 기능을 갖춘 수직이착륙 전투기 개발에 착수, 최근 시험비행까지 마친 것으로 알려졌다.

3일 홍콩의 명보(明報)에 따르면 중국 관영 중앙(CC)TV는 최근 미국 국방주간지인 디펜스뉴스를 인용해 중국이 스텔스 기능을 보유한 수직 이착륙 전투기인 젠(殲)-18을 개발중이라고 보도했다.

CCTV는 국제뉴스 분석 프로그램인 ‘환구시선’(環球視線)을 통해 “디펜스뉴스가 ‘중국이 이미 4월 초에 젠1-18에 대한 시험비행을 실시했다’고 보도했다”고 전했다.

디펜스뉴스에 따르면 젠-18은 스텔스 기능을 보유하고 있으며, 이 전투기의 최대 이륙중량은 1만2천430㎏, 작전반경은 2천㎞에 달하는 것으로 알려졌다.

이 같은 CCTV의 보도는 중국 관영매체들이 잇따라 중국의 신무기 개발 관련 뉴스를 전하는 상황에서 나온 것이어서 관심을 모으고 있다.

인민일보 자매지인 환구시보(環球時報) 영문판인 글로벌 타임스는 지난달 25일 중국 인터넷 매체에 유포되고 있던 젠-15기의 사진을 실었다.

글로벌 타임스는 또 지난달 19에는 중국이 지난 4월 17일 쓰촨(四川)성 청두(成都) 소재 항공기 디자인 연구소 비행장에서 스텔스 전투기인 ’젠(殲)-20(J-20)’의 두번째 시험비행을 했다고 보도한 바 있다.

앞서 중국 관영 신화통신은 지난 4월 6일 웹사이트를 통해 중국이 랴오닝(遼寧)성 다롄(大連) 조선소에서 새로운 항공모함으로 개조 중인 것으로 알려진 바랴그(Varyag)호의 사진 20장을 공개한 바 있다.

신화통신은 당시 사진 캡션을 통해 1998년 우크라이나에서 도입한 옛 소련의 미완성 항공모함인 바랴그호에 대한 개조작업이 10년 이상의 작업 끝에 거의 마무리 단계에 이르렀다면서 “항공모함을 보유하려는 모든 중국인의 꿈이 조만간 실현될 것”이라고 보도했다.
