2 Koreans face sentencing for cheating US casinos

Two South Korean nationals face sentencing for what authorities say was a scheme to defraud Foxwoods Resort Casino of hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Prosecutors say Gy Young-su, 60, and Kim Wook-yung, 34, are scheduled to be sentenced Monday in U.S. District Court in Hartford, Connecticut.

They pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit wire fraud and theft from a gambling establishment on Indian country.

Authorities say Gy and Kim played a game called Macao-style midi baccarat last year in which Gy used a ``holdout device'' in his sleeve to switch cards in and out to his advantage. Kim acted as a ``blocker'' to distract casino personnel from observing Gy's use of the device.

Prosecutors say Gy and Kim admitted they caused losses of between $400,000 and $1 million to Foxwoods. (AP)

한인 사기도박단 2명 징역형 직면…커네티컷· 카지노서 1백만불 사취

커네티컷주 카지노에서 전자기기를 이용해 100만 달러 규모의 사기 행각을 벌이던 한인 남녀 2명이 징역형에 직면해 있다.

커네티컷주 검찰 카지노 전담반은 기영수(남·60)씨와 김우경(여·34)씨가 커네티컷주 하트포드 지법에서 월요일 선고를 받게 돼 있다고 말했다. 이들은 카지노 게임 도중 속임수를 사용해 최고 100만 달러를 가로챈 혐의를 받고 있다.

검찰에 따르면 기씨와 김씨는 지난 9월 8일부터 10월 20일까지 수 차례 폭스우드 카지노를 방문해 ‘바카라’ 게임을 즐겼으며 이 과정에서 소매에 소형 전자기기를 숨겨 와 속임수를 써왔다.

폭스우드 카지노 측에서 기씨 등이 속임수를 사용하는 장면을 포착한 감시카메라 자료 등을 경찰에 제공했으며, 당국은 이들이 국제 카지노 사기단과 연루됐을 가능성을 감안해 주경찰과 국토안보부 등 연방 수사기관이 합동으로 수사를 단행했다.

기씨는 사기단의 리더로 지목되고 있다. 폭스우드에서 40여만 달러를 사기 친 혐의를 받고 있는 그에겐 현재 16건의 속임수와 속임수장치 소지죄, 7개의 1급 절도죄 등이 적용됐다. 기씨와 함께 체포된 김씨는 8만3000달러를 가로챈 혐의를 받고 있으며, 카지노 등지에서 사기 혐의로 수 차례 체포된 전과자인 것으로 드러났다.
