Crisis might occur on Korean Peninsula in March; Local daily

“A crisis” may likely to happen “in March,” a local daily reported recently, citing military sources.

“We have focused on the patterns in the provocations North Korea has committed since last year in the process of establishing the new heir-apparent system to succeed to current leader Kim Jong-il,” JoongAng daily quoted a ranking intelligent officer at the military as saying.

“It’s highly probable that North Korea provokes shortly before or after Korea-U.S. joint military drill, code-named Key Resolve, slated for late February till early March.”

It is checked that the North Korean military has been repeating drill of opening and closing the muzzles of cannons installed along the western coast of Haeju although the two sides were holding working-level military talks, Feb. 8-9.

The military sources also said that the military spotted the scenes that North Korean units redeployed guided missiles towards the border lines and loaded long range artillery in exercises.

“North Korea showed similar military movements shortly before it torpedoed the South Korean warship, Cheonan, on March 26, last year,” an officer at the Joint Chiefs of Staff said. “It seems to be a sort of cheating tactics rather than a simple military winter drill.”

한반도 ‘3월 위기설’

군 “북, 내달 키 리졸브 전후로 도발 가능성” 최근 천안함 때와 유사한 해안포 훈련 포착 정황으로 군 내부에서 ‘3월 위기설’이 거론되고 있다.

군 고위 정보 관계자는 “북한이 후계체제 확립 과정에서 지난해부터 지속하고 있는 도발 패턴에 주목하고 있다”며 “2월 말~3월 초 한·미 연합훈련인 키 리졸브(Key Resolve) 연습을 전후해 북한이 도발해올 가능성이 크다”고 말했다.

북한 군은 8~9일의 남북 군사 실무회담에도 불구하고 최근 황해남도 해주 일대 해안포 포문을 열고 닫는 훈련을 반복하고 있는 것으로 파악됐다.

또 휴전선 쪽으로 전진 배치한 유도탄과 장사정포에 포탄을 장전·원위치하는 훈련을 하는 모습도 우리 군 당국에 포착됐다고 군 소식통은 전했다.

합참 관계자는 “북한은 지난해 3월 26일 천안함 폭침사건 전에도 유사한 움직임을 보인 바 있다”며 “단순한 동계훈련이라기보다는 일종의 기만전술로 보인다”고 말했다.
