Travel alert issued for Egypt

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade Sunday issued a travel alert, urging people to defer nonessential travel to Egypt as police and protesters continued to clash in Cairo and across the North African country.

The ministry will consider banning all travel to the country if the situation worsens.

It advised Korean travelers there to exercise a “high degree of caution” while staying in their hotels or residences until the situation stabilizes. The ministry also advised those seeking to travel to the country to reconsider their plans.

The country's flag carrier Korean Air has altered schedules for its flights to Egypt. Korean Air flies to Cairo via Tashkent, Uzbekistan, on Monday, Wednesday and Saturday, landing in the Egyptian capital at night.

Anti-government protests have continued for days in Egypt, turning the country into a state of anarchy. Many other countries, including the U.S. and Canada, have issued similar warnings.
