The government said Friday there have been no reports of South Korean casualties in the crash of a Cuban airliner that was carrying 68 people, including 28 foreigners.
Cuba's state TV reported that the plane went down in a mountainous area Thursday in local time while flying from the eastern city of Santiago de Cuba to the capital of Havana.
The foreign ministry in Seoul said that chances are low that South Koreans were aboard because all of the country's 40 nationals living in Cuba have been accounted for.
"But we're not ruling out the possibility that (Korean) tourists could have been on board," a ministry official said on customary condition of anonymity.
South Korea's embassy in Mexico plans to check with Cuba's foreign ministry to see if there were any South Korean passengers on the plane, the official said.
