Irked by tweeter, anchor Kim Ju-ha threatens suit

Kim Ju-ha, one of the most popular female anchors and tweeters, is making headlines as she is threatening to file a defamation suit against a tweeter who called her “brainless,” stirring up a dispute on Twitter.

A Twitter user nicknamed Social Holic, who introduced himself as a full-time tweeter addicted to social media, wrote a line Friday that apparently targeted the anchor, deriding her as “brainless.”

“There is a ‘brainless’ person on the Korean Twitter scene, who has been repeating ‘Ppaekkom’ and ‘Hands up if you are sleepy’ for months,” he tweeted.

Though not directly mentioning Kim’s name, the phrases “ppaekkom” and “Hands up if you are sleepy” are frequently used by the leading anchor. “Ppaekkom” is a Korean mimetic word for sticking one’s head out through a gap. Kim has often used the expression in the opening lines on her Twitter account.

The MBCTVanchor has about 140,000 followers, and is one of the most popular tweeters in Korea. Social Holic is also a power tweeter with some 57,000 followers.

Social Holic said Twitter is a cultural place where communication, information and technology coexist, but someone is reproducing one’s ignorance through Twitter. “‘Ppaekkom’ and ‘Hands up’ might mislead people who are new to the social networking service,” he said.

Irritated by his message, Kim also tweeted a message: “I will seriously consider taking legal action. If you don’t like the messages I post, just unfollow me.”

She also said her move is to establish a sound Twitter culture, asking for some help from lawyers for her possible litigation.

“I don’t think this is a personal issue, but a matter to be discussed with tweeters for a healthy Twitter culture,” she said.

The fight between Kim and Social Holic is triggering a dispute on Twitter — some side with anchor Kim, saying people should observe proper etiquette on Twitter, while others argue Kim is “overreacting” to the issue.

김주하 앵커 '무뇌' 논란 발끈, 법적 대응 시사

한국에서 가장 유명한 여성 앵커 중 한 사람인 MBC 김주하 앵커가 트위터에서 자신에게 '무뇌'라는 표현을 한 네티즌의 발언에 대해 불쾌한 심경을 드러내며 법적 대응을 시사했다.

소셜홀릭이라는 닉네임의 트위터 사용자는 15일 자신의 트위터에 "우리나라 트위터에 무뇌(無腦)가 하나 있다. 오전엔 '빼꼼', 오후엔 '졸리신 분 손'. 이 것을 몇달째 하고 있는 뻔뻔한 무뇌"라는 글을 올렸다. 그는 "트위터는 소통, 정보, 기술이 하나로 어우러진 문화 공간이라고 할 수 있다. 이런 곳에서 자신의 무식함을 재생산, 확산하는 사람이 있다. 이건 트위터를 막 시작한 사람들을 오도하는 거다. 언제까지 하려는지"라고도 했다.

비록 실명은 언급하지 않았지만 '빼꼼'이나 '졸리신 분 손'은 김주하 앵커가 트위터에서 자주 사용하는 표현이다.

이에 김 앵커는 15일 "빼꼼, 졸리신분 손. 이렇게 여러분과 대화를 시작한다고 내가 무뇌라고 말씀하시는 분이 계시다. 심각하게 법적대응도 생각하겠다. 내가 올리는 글이 맘에 들지 않으시면 가볍게 언팔을 하라. 여러분께 묻겠다. 내가 무뇌냐"라고 불쾌함을 표현했다.

또한 "트윗을 하고계신 변호사님들께 부탁 말씀드린다. 이번 일은 개인의 문제가 아니라 건전한 트윗 문화를 위해 공개적으로 트윗분들과 대응했으면 한다. 도움주실 변호사님 계시면 연락처를 알려달라"라며 법적 대응도 가능함을 시사했다.
