‘Happiness Evangelist’ Choi, husband found dead

TV celebrity Choi Yoon-hee, 63, known as the ‘Happiness Evangelist’, and her 72-year-old husband were found dead at a motel northwest of Seoul, Thursday night.

Police said Friday that the couple checked in at a motel in Baekseok-dong, Ilsan, Gyeonggi Province, at around 7:15 Thursday morning but they did not check out even at night. A motel employee unlocked the room at 8:30 p.m. and found them dead, according to the police.

Choi had hung herself in the room and her husband had hung himself in the bathroom.

In the suicide note left behind, Choi reportedly said that she had become very depressed due to her chronic health problems such as heart and respiratory diseases and she was very sorry to her family and friends.

Choi’s husband is believed to have helped her suicide and then he did the same, said a police officer.

TV freelancer, Choi appeared in a number of TV programs, such as “Making the World Joyful” and “Making Happiness” on KBS. As the Happiness Evangelist, she authored some 20 books on hope and happiness.

A few years ago, she stopped appearing on TV due to her worsening health. She also confessed to a suicide attempt to the media last year.

행복전도사 최윤희 부부 모텔서 숨진채 발견

'행복전도사'로 알려진 작가이자 방송인 최윤희(63)씨가 7일 오후 8시30분께 경기도 고양시 일산동구 백석동의 한 모텔에서 남편 김모(72)씨와 함께 숨진 채 발견됐다.

경찰은 이날 오전 7시15분께 투숙한 최씨 부부가 나오지 않는 것을 이상히 여긴 모텔 종업원에 의해 발견됐다고 밝혔다.

최씨는 모텔방에서, 남편은 화장실에서 각각 목을 맨 채 발견됐으며 편지 1장 분량의 유서가 발견됐다.

유서에는 최씨가 심장과 폐질환 등 지병을 비관한 내용, 가족과 지인에게 미안하다는 내용 등이 담겨있다.

경찰은 남편이 먼저 최씨의 자살을 돕고 뒤 따라 목을 매 목숨을 끊은 것으로 보고 있다.

최씨는 프리랜서로 활동하면서 kbs 즐거운 세상, 행복만들기 등 방송 프로그램에 고정 출연, 주부로서 자신의 경험담을 웃음으로 풀어내 행복전도사로 알려져 왔으며 희망과 행복을 주제로 20여권의 저서를 남겼다.

최씨는 수년 전부터 건강이 좋지 않아 방송활동을 중단했으며 지난해에는 한 언론을 통해 자살 시도 사실을 고백하기도 했다.
