Female goalie Moon So-ri praised for fighting spirit

Allowing a goal is an often agonizing experience for goalkeepers. Moon So-ri, 20, the South Korean goalie in the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup 2010 and a student of Ulsan College, experienced this agony five times during the team’s semi-final match against Germany, Friday.

Yet she is receiving praise and admiration from fans for the effort and fighting spirit she showed during the match, not to mention her admirable looks.

During the match, Moon blocked 11 out of the 18 shots launched by the German team.

Battling through pouring rain and against Germany’s relentless attack, the Korean team struggled to find a way to shift the momentum.

When Germany scored its first goal within 13 minutes, Moon lost focus and allowed the second goal to pass through. After this, although Moon successfully blocked the next six shots, she kept her head mostly bowed.

However, Moon impressed viewers with the excellent reflexes and positioning that only allowed four goals during the previous four matches. Messages of encouragement from netizens have not ceased.

On her home page, Moon posted a small wish reading, “Please cheer for the women’s football team.” Moon attracted more than 15,000 fans that posted messages like “Thank you for your efforts,” “You're pretty” and "We will continue cheering for the women’s football squad.”

Although the South Korean women’s football team failed to reach the final round, Moon’s wish has been granted.

하지만 모질게 내리는 빗줄기, 남자 선수들도 다루기 힘들다는 자블라니의 심술, 홈팬들의 일방적인 응원을 받은 독일의 무서운 기세 등 그에게 유리한 상황은 하나도 없었다.

결국 전반 13분 선제골을 시작으로 흔들렸다. 13분 뒤에는 집중력이 흐트러지며 두 번째 골을 실점했다. 이후 6개의 슈팅을 막아냈지만 끝내 고개를 들지 못했다. 한 경기 5실점과 팀의 패배를 막지 못했다는 자책감에 그는 고개를 숙였다.

하지만 그는 앞선 4경기에서 4골만 내주며 1점대 방어율을 유지했다. 뛰어난 반사신경과 위치선정, 안정감 있는 수비 리딩으로 한국의 4강행을 떠받쳤다. 네티즌의 응원의 메시지도 끊이지 않고 있다.

'여자축구를 응원해 주세요'라는 소망이 달려 있는 문소리의 미니홈피에는 이날 오전에만 1만 5000명이 넘는 팬들이 찾았다. 이전까지 방문자의 합계는 4만 명이었다. 팬들은 “너무 수고하셨어요. 그리고 예쁘시네요”, “앞으로 여자축구를 열심히 응원하겠습니다”라는 격려의 글이 쏟아지고 있다. 비록 결승 진출에 실패했지만 문소리의 작은 소망은 이뤄졌다.
