A peek into Samsung executive pay structure

How much does an executive of Samsung Electronics earn? There has been little objective data as the global chipmaker has not made it public.

But a court ruling allowed a rare peek into the corporation’s pay structure. A vice president of Samsung Electronics earns 784 million won ($651,540) in salary and bonuses a year and severance pay is more than 17 billion won, according to revelations in a court ruling, Wednesday.

The information was revealed amid a legal fight between an insurance company and the distraught family of a late Samsung Electronics executive over compensation.

According to the Seoul Central District Court, the executive, who was a vice president of the firm’s workplace in Gumi, North Gyeongsang Province, at the time of the accident in January 2009, made 784 million won in 2008 alone — 517 million won in salary and 266 million won in bonuses. The figure was based on tax reports. Following his death, the company offered 1.77 billion won in severance pay.

The ruling allowed people to catch a glimpse into the company’s wage structure. The executive died in January 2009 after being hit by an out-of-control vehicle on an icy road.

그러나 법원 판결로 이 회사의 봉급 구조를 가까스로 들어볼 수 있었다. 수요일 판결문에 따르면, 부사장 한 사람이 연간 봉급과 보너스를 합쳐 7억 8,400만원 받고 퇴직금이 17억이 넘은 것으로 나타났다.

이 같은 정보는 보험사와 고(故) 삼성전자 임원의 슬픔에 잠긴 가족간에 보상문제를 가지고 법정 다툼을 벌이는 가운데 나타났다.

서울중앙지방법원에 따르면, 2009년 1월 사고 당시 경상북도 구미시에 있는 이 회사의 공장 부사장이었던 이 임원은 2008년 한 해에 봉급 5억 1,700만 원 보너스 2억 6,600만 원 등 7억 8,400만원을 받았다. 이는 납부 세금 기준이다. 사망 후 삼성은 이 임원에게 17억 7,000만원을 퇴직금으로 주었다.

이 판결은 사람들에게 삼성의 임금 구조를 들여다볼 수 있게 해 주었다. 이 부사장은 2009년 1월 빙판길에서 제어불능의 차량에 치어 사망했다.
