Police to double scores over child molestation cases

Listen

The National Police Agency (NPA) said Wednesday it will award double performance scores for officers and police departments that solve or prevent sexual assaults on children, another effort to prevent such crimes.

"Following our policy to prioritize sex crimes against children, we decided to drastically increase the performance scores," said Lee Kum-hyung, head of the agency's Public Safety Bureau.

By doubling the performance scores, successful arrests and prevention will earn the officers and police departments the highest ratings.

On the other hand, officers and precincts in jurisdictions where the crimes occur will have their ratings lowered, a measure meant to focus efforts on prevention, according to the agency.

The NPA declared "war" this week on child sex crimes following weeks of high-profile cases in which young girls were abducted and attacked in broad daylight.

A special unit was launched on Wednesday to deal with the crime, with increased manpower nationwide.
