12 dead as bus falls off bridge

Twelve passengers were killed and 12 others seriously injured on Saturday afternoon when an express bus crashed off a motorway approaching Incheon Bridge into a construction site.

The bus was wrecked and lying upside down when paramedics and police arrived.

According to the Incheon Metropolitan Police Agency, which is investigating the accident, the express bus was heading to Incheon International Airport from Pohang, North Gyeongsang Province.

Soon after passing the highway tollgate leading to Incheon Bridge, the bus driver saw a 1-ton truck collide with a subcompact car several meters ahead. The subcompact car was stalled in the middle of the road due to an apparent engine problem when the truck hit its rear end.

The bus driver tried to avoid the pile up of these two vehicles, but lost control of the bus, which rammed into a guardrail and fell about 10 meters to the ground at around 1:20 p.m.

"We are examining the exact cause of the accident, but it seems that the driver wasn't keeping a safe distance from other vehicles. We are also questioning the driver of the subcompact car to see why she didn't move her car to the shoulder of the road so not to remain an obstacle for oncoming vehicles," a police officer said. Incheon Mayor Song Young-gil, who visited the site Saturday, said he will re-examine the safety level of guardrails installed at the motoway and the bridge that was built last year.

Most of the victims were related; they were on their way to the airport for a trip overseas. Forty-two-year-old Lim Chan-ho, professor at the Gyeongju University, was on the bus with his wife, two sons and a daughter to attend a seminar abroad.

But only the eight-year-old son survived. Local media quoted one of the bereaved family members saying, "No one has the guts to tell him about what has happened to the rest of the family. It seems too harsh."

Another family "Seol" lost their father and daughter while the mother and a grandchild survived. Most of the victims sustained severe head injuries.

POSCO, which lost two of its researchers on their way to a business trip in Australia, swiftly expressed condolences and mourned the loss.

The bodies of the victims remain at separate hospitals in Incheon and the representatives of the bereaved family members have begun discussing how to proceed with the funeral and how to negotiate compensation from the bus company.

Pohang Mayor Park Seung-ho has dispatched 30 officials to the scene of the accident and to the Incheon hospitals to attend to the victims' families.

인천대교 인근서 버스 추락 `12명 사망` 참사

인천대교와 인천국제공항을 연결하는 도로에서 고속버스가 도로 옆 지하차도 공사현장으로 추락해 12명이 사망하고 12명이 중경상을 당했다.

3일 오후 1시17분께 인천시 중구 운서동 인천대교 톨게이트를 공항 방향으로 500ｍ 가량 지난 지점에서 포항~경주~인천국제공항을 운행하는 고속버스가 도로 밑 공사 현장으로 추락했다.

당시 도로에는 편도 3차로 중 2차로에 마티즈 승용차가 엔진고장으로 서 있었고 운전자는 갓길로 나와 보험회사에 전화를 하던 중이었다.

이 때 뒤에서 달리던 1t 화물차가 멈춰 선 마티즈 승용차를 보고 급히 1차로 쪽으로 방향을 바꾸면서 마티즈 차량 왼쪽 뒤편을 들이받고 1차로로 튕겨나가 도로 중앙벽에 부딪혔다.

이어 사고 버스가 이들 차량을 피해 우측으로 빠져나가다 마티즈 차량 오른쪽 뒤편과 가드레일을 차례로 들이받고 도로 4.5ｍ 아래 지하차도 공사현장으로 추락했다.

사고 당시 고속버스에는 운전사 정모(53)씨와 승객 23명 등 모두 24명이 타고 있었다.

이들 가운데 상당수는 가족여행을, 일부는 인천공항을 통해 해외출장을 가던 길이었던 것으로 알려졌다.

버스가 4.5ｍ 아래 공사현장으로 추락하면서 뒤집혀 설해용(69)씨 등 12명이 숨졌고 운전사 정씨 등 12명이 부상해 인하대병원, 길병원, 나사렛병원 등에서 치료를 받고 있다.

사명자 가운데 신원이 확인된 9구의 시신은 인하대병원(7구), 검단탑병원(1구), 적십자병원(1구)으로 옮겨졌으며 신원 미상의 30~40대 여성 사망자 시신 3구는 길병원, 성인천 한방병원, 적십자병원으로 이송됐다.

사고가 나자 경찰과 소방당국은 100여명의 인력을 현장에 긴급 투입해 일부 차로를 통제하고 부상자 구조에 나섰다.

이 사고로 인천대교와 인천국제공항을 잇는 도로의 일부 차로가 통제되면서 주말 오후 인천공항으로 향하던 차량들이 뒤엉켜 심한 혼잡을 빚기도 했다.

한편 사고 경위를 조사 중인 경찰은 일단 엔진고장으로 2차로에 멈춰 서있던 마티즈 승용차와 1t 화물차가 1차 사고를 내자 이들 차량을 피하려던 버스 운전사가 급제동을 하면서 핸들을 급히 오른쪽으로 꺾으면서 가드레일을 들이받고 추락한 것으로 보고 있다.
