Will World Cup raise birthrate?

The World Cup group cheering may do more good for the nation other than bringing people together ― it may increase the birthrate.

While the nation is struggling with a falling birthrate, analysts and officials at the Ministry of Health and Welfare are carefully painting a rosy picture for next year since past records prove that the heat and enthusiasm for sport often develops into making babies.

According to government data, the birthrate marked 1.17 in 2002, but rose to 1.19 in 2003.

The figure fell to 1.16 in 2004 and 1.08 in 2005, the lowest ever.

However, in 2007, a year after the 2006 World Cup, the birthrate again arose to 1.26, only to slide back to 1.19 in 2008 and 1.15 in 2009.

Lee Sang-young, director general of the population and children policy bureau at the ministry, told reporters Thursday that a similar pattern was detected in 1989, a year after the Seoul Olympics. "I cannot say for sure but we are hoping for more babies next year," he smiled.

자꾸 떨어지는 출생률을 겪고 있는 가운데 보건복지부 관료들과 분석사들은 스포츠 열풍이 애를 낳는데 공헌한 과거 기록으로 보아 내년에도 출생률이 좋을 것이라는 장미 빛 그림을 조심스럽게 그리고 있다.

정부 통계에 따르면 출생률이 2002년 1.17명이었는데 2003년에는 1.19명이었다. 이 수치는 2004년 1.16 그리고 2005년에는 최저치인 1.08을 기록했다. 그러나 2006년 월드컵이 있고 난 2007년에는 이 수치가 1.26올랐으며 그런 다음 2008년에는 1.19 그리고 2009년에는 2.15로 떨어졌다.

복지부 인구 및 아동 정책국 이상영국장은 목요일 기자들과 만난 자리에서 서울 올림픽이 열린 1년 후인 1989년에도 유사 유형이 감지됐다고 밝혔다. 그는 “확신할 수능 없지만 내년 아이들이 더 많이 생겼으면 좋겠습니다”라고 말했다.
