Japanese PM Hatoyama resigns in 8 months

Japanese Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama has expressed his intention to resign, facing mounting pressure over the falling approval rating and relocation of the U.S. air base in Hutenma, Okinawa.

NHK TV and Kyoto News Agency said Tuesday that Hatoyama express his intention to resign the leadership and the Democratic Party will discuss measures at a joint gathering of the upper and lower houses of Parliament. Ichiro Ozawa, de facto leader and party secretary-general, alsotook similar action.

The Democratic Party is expected to take procedures to elect its leader and new prime minister as Hatoyama intends to step down after eight months in office.

Prime Minister Hatoyama dismissed Food Safety Minister Mizuho Fukushima, chief of the Social Democratic Party, as the minister rejected to sign the government’s draft on the relocation of the U.S. air base in Okinawa on which Japan and the United States agreed on April 28.

In defiance of this action, the Social Democratic Party walked out of the coalition government Sunday, pulling the approval rating of the Cabinet and the Democratic Party below 20 percent in a major opinion poll by the news media. With the election of the upper house scheduled for July, the upper house members of the Democratic Party had mounted pressure on Hatoyama to resign.

취임 8개월여만에 후텐마에 걸쳐 '좌초'

지지율 추락과 후텐마(普天間)기지 이전 문제로 퇴진 압력에 직면한 하토야마 유키오(鳩山由紀夫) 일본 총리가 결국 사의를 표명했다.

NHK방송과 교도(共同)통신은 2일 오전 하토야마 총리가 민주당 간부에게 사의를 표명했으며, 민주당은 오전에 열리는 중의원.참의원 양원총회에서 향후 대응방안을 논의한다고 전했다.

취임 8개월여만에 하토야마 총리가 사의를 표명함으로써 민주당은 향후 당 대표와 새로운 총리 선출을 위한 절차를 밟을 것으로 보인다.

하토야마 총리는 지난달 28일 미국과 오키나와(沖繩) 후텐마기지 이전안에 합의한뒤 이를 정부안으로 확정하는 과정에서 사민당수인 후쿠시마 미즈호(福島瑞穗) 소비자담당상이 서명을 거부하자 파면했다.

사민당이 이에 반발해 지난달 30일 연립정부에서 이탈하고 주초 발표된 주요 언론 여론조사에서 내각지지율과 민주당 지지율이 10%대로 추락하자 당내에서 국회운영과 7월 참의원선거를 치르기 어렵게 됐다며 참의원을 중심으로 하토야마 총리에게 퇴진압력을 가중해왔다.
