Seoul plans to brief China, Russia on Cheonan

South Korea plans to brief China and Russia on the outcome of the investigation on the Cheonan warship sinking incident before it makes a public announcement on it, Yonhap said Saturday.

Citing government officials, Yonhap said the government will provide a briefing to China and Russia prior to making a public announcement on the outcome of the investigation.

A team of international experts are in the process of determining the cause of the fatal sinking of the South Korean navy warship in late March.

Chinese and Russian experts are not part of the investigation team.

China is a member of the United Nations Security Council and a key ally to North Korea. China can exercise its veto power of assigning any punitive measure against North Korea even if the North is determined to be responsible for the fatal attack.

To persuade China, South Korea plans to provide "scientific and objective evidence" to the Chinese and also Russian sides, Yonhap said.

North Korea remains the prime suspect for the sinking of the Cheonan that killed 46 South Korean sailors.
