Rape Victim Faces 101 Lashes

A girl was raped in Bangladesh and she was the one who received the punishment instead of the rapist.

According to The Daily Star in Bangladesh on Jan. 24, a 16-year-old girl was raped by a 20-year-old villager in April last year.

She was so ashamed to the following attack that she did not lodge a complaint.

The girl's family had married her off to a man of the neighboring village but after a month into the marriage, medical test discovered she was seven months pregnant. She was divorced and she had to live at her father's place after an abortion.

Muslim elders in the village issued the 101 lashes fatwa (religious edict) but left the alleged rapist untouched. They also gave the victim's father a heavy fine and issued another fatwa that her family would be forced into isolation if they failed to pay up.

The girl told the newspaper that the rapist had spoiled her life. "I want justice," she added.

She is to be kept in isolation until her family agreed to corporal punishment. A team of human rights activists will help the victim file separate cases against the culprits.

강간피해소녀에 101대 채찍형

방글라데시에서 강간을 당한 한 10대 소녀가 채찍형에 처해진 반면, 강간범은 무죄 판결을 받은 것으로 나타났다.

24일(현지시간) 방글라데시의 데일리 스타 신문은 16살의 소녀가 작년 4월 동네 청년에게 강간을 당했다고 보도했다.

소녀는 강간을 당한 후 감당하기 힘든 수치심에 입을 닫았다.

얼마 지나지 않아 그의 부모들은 옆 동네의 한 남자와 결혼을 시켰고, 결혼한지 1달 뒤 건강검진을 받다 임신 7개월임이 드러나 이혼을 당했다. 그녀는 이혼 후 낙태를 하였고 아버지 집에서 머물러야 했다.

마을의 무슬림 원로들은 종교법에 따라 소녀에게는 101대의 채찍형을 가한 반면, 강간한 청년은 아무런 조건없이 용서했다. 또한 피해소녀 아버지에게 무거운 벌금형을 내리고 만약 벌금을 내지 않을 경우 강제 격리를 당하게 했다.

피해소녀는 강간범이 자신의 삶을 망쳐놨다면서 "정의를 원한다"고 밝혔다.

한편 그녀의 가족이 채찍형에 동의하기 전까지 피해소녀는 격리된다. 인권 변호사들은 소녀가 강간범에게 소송을 제기 할 수 있도록 도와줄 것이라고 밝혔다.
