Most South Koreans experience premarital sex before they turn 30, a lifestyle survey showed Sunday.
The poll conducted by the Korean Women's Development Institute (KWDI) on 3,084 people showed that 67.2 percent of unmarried males aged 25-30 experienced premarital sex using some form of contraception in the past year, while 45.1 percent of single males of ages 19-24 said they engaged in premarital sex during the past year.
Among female respondents, 51.2 percent of those aged 25-30 said they had premarital sex using a contraceptive in the past year, while 34.9 percent of respondents aged 19-24 said they had premarital sex using birth control.
The survey also showed that 51.8 percent males aged 25-30 had unprotected sex last year, while 43.2 percent of females in the same age bracket had sex with no form of contraception.
The KWDI survey also showed 11.4 percent of males aged 25-30 felt virginity was important in finding a spouse, while 12 percent of females in the same age bracket shared the same view.
"It can be interpreted that at least two-thirds of males and half of females experience premarital sex before entering their 30s," Lee Mee-jung, a senior researcher at KWDI said.

한국여성 경책연구원이 남녀 3,084명을 상대로 한 조사에 따르면, 지난 해 25-30세 미혼 남성의 67.1 퍼센트가 지난 1년간 피임을 하고 혼전 성교를 했으며 19-24세 미혼 남성의 45.1 퍼센트가 혼전 성교를 했다고 응답했다.
여성 응답자 중 25-30세의 미혼여성의 51.2 퍼센트가 피임을 하고 혼전 성교를 하였으며 19-24세 응답자 중 34.9 퍼센트가 피임을 하고 혼전 경험을 한 것으로 나타났다.
이 조사는 또한 25-30세 남성의 51.8퍼센트가 피임없이 성교를 가졌으며 이 연령대의 43.2 퍼센트가 피임없이 성교를 가졌다.
25-30세의 남성 11.4 퍼센트가 배우자를 찾는데 처녀성이 중요하다고 느낀 반면 동일 연령대 여성 12퍼센트가 유사한 생각을 갖고 있었다.
연구원의 이미정 선임 연구원은 "적어도 남성의 2/3와 여성의 절반이 30세이 전에 혼전 성경험을 한 것으로 해석할 수 있다'고 밝혔다.
