Man Killed Wife With TV Remote

A man who killed his wife by throwing a TV remote at her head was Friday jailed for three years, AFP reported.

Paul Harvey, 46, killed Gloria Laguna, 48, by a "fluke" chance after the remote hit a weak artery near her neck. Despite his efforts to revive her, she died from a massive brain hemorrhage, the Old Bailey heard.

Harvey, an electrical engineer from London, had in March pleaded guilty to the manslaughter of his wife, a former U.S. diplomat.

Defense lawyer Jonathan Goldberg said Harvey was "deeply ashamed and remorseful" at the death of his wife, who had had a very rare condition which neither she nor her husband had known about.

"All he did was throw the remote control in her direction. By a fluke chance, maybe the same as, in a different context, winning the lottery, it landed on the exact spot where she had a weakness," Goldberg said.

The couple had been arguing about maintenance payments Harvey was making to a stepdaughter from a previous marriage when he lost his temper, the court heard.

Judge Giles Forrester said Harvey had to take responsibility for his actions, adding: "To throw a hard object such as a remote control device so as to strike your wife in this way was irresponsible and dangerous."

영국의 한 남성이 말다툼을 하던 아내에게 TV리모콘을 던져 숨지는 사건이 발생했다. 이 일로 그는 징역 3년형을 선고받았다.

AFP통신에 따르면 런던 중부 유스톤에 거주하는 전기기사 폴 하비(48)는 최근 그의 부인 라그나와 말다툼을 벌이게 됐다. 결혼하기 전 입양한 의붓딸에게 계속 양육비를 지원해왔다는 사실이 발각됐기 때문.

싸움이 절정에 이를 때쯤 화를 참지 못한 하비는 손에 쥐고 있던 리모콘을 라그나쪽으로 던졌고 이 리모콘은 불행하게도 라그나의 목 주위 동맥을 강타했다.

라그나는 그 자리에서 졸도했고 당황한 하비는 바로 부인에게 달려가 인공호흡을 시도했지만 결국 라그나는 지주막하출혈로 숨을 거뒀다.

하비의 변호인은 법정에서 "하비는 아내를 매우 사랑했으며 이번 일을 후회하고 있다"며 선처를 호소했다.

검찰은 "의도하지 않았다 해도 결국 그녀를 죽음에 이르게 한 것은 명백하다"며 "리모콘 같은 것을 던진 행위 자체가 매우 위험했던 만큼 비극을 초래한 대가를 마땅히 치러야 한다"고 주장했다.

결국 하비는 아내를 죽음에 이르게 한 살해 혐의로 징역 3년형을 선고받게 됐다.
