Twitter Chosen Top English Word of Year

"Twitter" has been selected as English Word of the Year, a word used most in media and web sites in the United States this year.

The San Francisco Chronicle said Monday that the Global Language Monitor headquartered in Austin, Texas, has voted "Twitter," the name of San Francisco-based micro-blogging site, as the most popular English word of 2009.

The list of popular English words include "Stimulus" used in promoting the American economy, and "Vampire"which has become popular thanks to the popularity of film "Twilight."

"Obamacare," a derivative from U.S. President Barack Obama, and new flu "A[H1N1]" virus are also on the list.

Last year, "Change" was chosen as the most popular English word in the United States, which emerged amid the popularity of President Obama.

올해의 영어단어 `트위터' 선정

미국에서 올해 미디어와 웹사이트 등을 통해 가장 많이 사용된 영어 단어로 `트위터'(TWITTER)'가 선정됐다.

30일 샌프란시스코크로니클에 따르면 미국 텍사사주 오스틴에 위치한 `글로벌 랭귀지 모니터'는 샌프란시스코 마이크로블로깅 기업인 `트위터'를 2009년의 영어 단어로 뽑았다.

트위터를 비롯해 올해 미디어에서 애용된 영어 단어 중에는 미국 경기 부양 정책에서 나온 `스티뮬러스 '(STIMULUS), 영화 트와일라잇의 인기 덕분에 유행한 `뱀파이어'(VAMPIRE) 등이 포함돼 있다.

버락 오바마 미국 대통령의 이름에서 파생된 단어인 `오바마케어(OBAMACARE)'나 인플루엔자 A[H1N1](신종플루) 바이러스 등도 많이 등장한 단어로 꼽혔다.

지난해 가장 많이 애용된 영어 단어로는 오바마 대통령의 인기 속에 등장한 `변화'(CHANGE)가 선정된 바 있다.
