Korean Galbi to Debut at Emmy Awards

Listen

Korean ``galbi'' will debut at the Emmy Awards launching party to be served for hundreds of Hollywood celebrities, marking the first time the well-known Korean cuisine will be introduced to such a big, prominent event.

Los Angeles-based "Calbi," a food catering service, said galbi, a popular Korean grilled dish with marinated beef ribs, was "invited" for the Emmy launching party and would serve the Korean cuisine to Hollywood stars who will attend the event, JoongAng Ilbo reported Saturday.

In the past, the Korean "Jinro"-brand liquor was served as a cocktail during the Golden Globe Awards parties, promoting the Korean liquor at the international event. But this is the first time that a Korean cuisine would be served as part of the main dish for such a large-scale gala in the United States.

A Korean manager with the catering service said the company was approached by the GBK Production, a major U.S. event organizer with the proposal.

The Emmy party will be attended by top-notch Hollywood stars, including Shirley Maclaine, Justin Timberlake, as well as the Korean-American Hollywood star, Sandra Oh.

Ahn Ok-joo, founder of Calbi, said: "I am more than thrilled to be invited for such a high-profile occasion. I heard only a handful of cuisines with good reputation are invited. I hope this becomes a good opportunity to raise the awareness of the Korean cuisine internationally."

The Emmy Awards was established by the Los Angeles-based Academy of Television Arts & Sciences. The name "Emmy" was chosen as a feminization of "immy," a nickname used for the image orthicon tubes that were common in early television cameras.
