Fake Yale PhD Faces Damages Suit

Listen

Sungkok Art Museum has filed a 216 million-won damages suit against Shin Jeong-ah, who it claims embezzled about 216 million won from the museum on seven occasions from April 2005 to July 2007 while staging exhibitions and an additional 160 million won from an affiliated research center, according to the Seoul Central District Court.

The court said that since the research center director had paid 160 million won, Shin was only liable to pay the rest.

Shin also allegedly forged her records showing she had acquired a Ph.D. from Yale University and used it to get a job at Sungkok, and Dongguk University. In the first and appeal trials, she was sentenced to 18 months behind bars.

The Supreme Court, however, sent the case back to the Seoul Western District Court in January, asking it to reconsider the term of imprisonment.
