Seoul City Ordered to Pay for Listening Exam Mishap
A court on Monday ordered the Seoul Education Board to compensate a college applicant who claimed he messed up his English listening test, part of the college entrance exam, due to the test organizers' poor management.
A 19-year-old male student, identified by his surname, Cho, took the state-run College Scholastic Ability Test last November.
In the middle, however, the recorder playing questions broke down. In a lawsuit, Cho claimed that this led him to score less than what he would have done, which was a major cause of his failure to enter his university of choice. The Seoul Central District Court ordered Seoul City to pay Cho and his mother a total of 2.3 million won in compensation.
However, it rejected Cho's request for the test venue manager to pay tuition costs associated with re-taking the college entrance exam.
"There is no evidence that Cho would have passed the entrance exam of the university where he wanted to go to if the problem (with the recorder) hadn't occurred," the judge said.
