Dual Citizen Caught for Dodging Tour of Duty

Listen

A 34-year-old man with "dual citizenship" faces criminal prosecution after repeated attempts to dodge the draft by forging pertinent documents.

According to the Justice Ministry Wednesday, the man identified with his family name, Lee - who is known to hold citizenship from a South American country - tried to give up his Korean nationality in 2003 for the obvious purpose of forgoing a mandatory service.

But the man's request was rejected after it was found that he had hired "brokers" to forge related documents.

Lee was let go after making a written pledge that he would serve as asked of a Korean national.

He underwent a change of heart afterward and revoked his request to let him give up his Korean nationality, meaning he is still a Korean and required to serve compulsory military service.

Facing a date to join boot camp, he attempted to forge documents to prove he was no longer a Korean citizen.
