740,000 People Paid Respects to DJ

The government said Monday around 746,000 people paid respects to the late former President Kim Dae-jung during the six-day mourning period that ended Sunday.

The Ministry of Public Administration and Security said a total of 746,201 people had visited 184 altars set up across the country. South, North Jeolla provinces and Gwangju city ㅡ Kim’s political strongholds ㅡ accounted for 54 percent of the mourners.

Of them, South Jeolla Province ranked first in the number of mourners with 133,409, followed by Gwangju city with 133,409 and North Jeolla Province with 67,947. Around 160,000 people paid condolences to the country’s first Nobel Prize winner in Seoul alone.
