The administration launched a 48-member committee Wednesday to prepare for the 60th anniversary of the outbreak of the 1950 Korean War in 2010.

The panel, co-headed by Prime Minister Han Seung-soo and former Prime Minister Lee Hong-gu, will work with government agencies and groups of war veterans to start commemorative projects.

``Our mission is to help post-war generations understand the war and be grateful for the countries that assisted South Korea as members of the United Nations,'' Han said during the inaugural committee meeting. ``We will also focus on sharing our experience of rapid economic growth with the world and consolidating diplomatic and economic ties with countries.''

The government plans to invite 3,000 foreign veterans who participated in the war to Korea next year, on the occasion of the 60th anniversary. It will also organize a ``peace camp'' for 300 of the veteran's descendents, to help them learn about the war, Korea's economic development and its culture, according to the spokesman.

South Korea and the United States will also begin joint projects to mark the anniversary. The United States recently launched a committee composed of U.S. veterans of the Korean War for the projects.
