The governing Grand National Party (GNP) proposed Wednesday the inclusion of its legislators in a Cabinet reshuffle which is expected to be conducted by President Lee Myung-bak this month.
``We believe it is necessary for three or four legislators of our party to join the Cabinet to facilitate communication between the party and the administration," said GNP floor leader Rep. Ahn Sang-soo. The prospect was discussed in a meeting of senior party officials and members of the party's decision-making Supreme Council.
The GNP's proposal reflects its belief that having members in the Cabinet will help Cheong Wa Dae to better understand the political sentiments of the people and make policy judgments accordingnly.
``A comprehensive Cabinet shake-up should be conducted in a way that will satisfy the public. I believe GNP members can contribute to the success of the Lee administration," Ahn said.
``The second half of the presidential term should be devoted to presenting visions and strategies for the future of the nation," he added.
Lee is believed to be considering a reshuffle before Aug. 15, replacing some ministers and presidential secretaries.
Political watchers are eyeing the possibility of pro-Park Geun-hye politicians from the GNP joining the administration in the forthcoming reshuffle.
Lee will meet with GNP Chairman Park Hee-tae early next week to coordinate their respective positions on the reshuffle and a possible shake-up of GNP leaders, party sources said.
Chairman Park is expected to run in the Oct. 28 by-election in Yangsan, South Gyeongsang Province. In that case, he will quit his party post.
