A low-ranking civil servant was indicted for embezzling about 1.2 billion won ($800,000) from a district office in Haenam, South Jeolla Province, Gwangju Prosecutors' Office said Tuesday.
The female civil servant, identified as Jang, 38, allegedly fabricated documents to embezzle part of government subsidies meant for the needy between June 2002 and February 2009.
Jang's embezzlement was originally detected by the nation's audit bureau last month and was being investigated after the case was referred to the prosecution. She has been arrested.
Her husband, 43, also a civil servant, was indicted without physical detention on charges of taking part of the embezzled money and helping hide the accused.
