The Namdaemun Police Station chief and four other officers were suspended Tuesday and ordered to go before a disciplinary committee over the escape of two detainees.
According to the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency, the station's head officer Kim Ki-yong was ordered to step down from his position until the committee meets to discuss the incident. He was replaced by Hyun Jae-sup, who headed a team in charge of security at the National Assembly.
The four other officers who were suspended had been guarding the station's detention center.
Hong Deok-ki, 25, and a 36-year-old man identified as Lee fled the center on Sunday evening while they were being questioned over embezzlement and theft allegations, respectively. Lee was caught six hours later, but Hong is still on the loose.
Hong is between 173 and 174 centimeters tall, a little chubby and was wearing a white shirt and training shoes. Police have offered a five million won reward for information that leads to the detention of Hong.
