The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) Tuesday recommended the head of the National Police Agency come up with supplementary measures to make sure female detainees do not feel sexually humiliated when required to remove their bras before confinement.
The move came as a 27-year-old female candlelit protester filed a petition to the human rights organization last summer along with other seven female demonstrators after they were required to take off their bras before being confined.
Human rights groups, along with detainees, condemned the request, which made them feel sexually humiliated, but police said the regulation is designed to keep detainees from using the bras to injure themselves or commit suicide.
``Even though the regulation aims to keep detainees from hurting themselves, it is required to take other necessary steps to keep them from feeling humiliated,'' NHRC said.
The female protestors were seized while participating in a demonstration against the resumption of U.S. beef imports last August and confined from Aug. 16 to 17.
