The world needs new international organizations to cope with new global challenges, such as the turmoil on the financial markets, climate change and a potential energy crisis, President Lee Myung-bak said Wednedsay.
``Globalization is accelerating, while the economy rapidly transcends international borders. At this point, a new international organization is needed to better deal with unprecedented global issues,'' Lee said, speaking at the World Knowledge Forum in Seoul. ``Now is the time to find common solutions to pressing global issues. We need to create a better order if necessary.''
Lee didn't elaborate on his proposal, but his aides said he has long believed the world needs new international organizations capable of tackling current global financial market issues, and that the United Nations must set up a new organization to deal with climate change. Lee also hopes South Korea will host the headquarters of these new international organizations, they said.
The President reiterated his government's Green Growth strategy.
``My government has presented low emission green growth as the nation's future vision. Knowledge integration will be necessary in various fields to resolve global issues, like climate change and energy problems, and attain sustainable economic growth,'' Lee said.
Lee expressed concerns about the global financial crisis.
``The U.S.-originated financial crisis has hit the global economy hard and terrified many people. Uncertainty seems the most appropriate word to describe today's circumstances,'' said Lee.
