An international exposition on fire and emergency equipment will be held next month in Samcheok, Gangwon Province, to promote the fire and emergency equipment industry and raise public awareness on the importance of disaster prevention.

Samcheok International Fire and Emergency (SAFEM) Expo 2008 will run from Oct. 14 to 18 under the theme ``Fire and Disaster Prevention Makes a Happy World.'' This is the first international-level expo of this kind held in Korea and it is being co-hosted by Samchoek and KOTRA.

A number of government agencies alongside fire and emergency equipment producers from 40 countries will take part in the event.

Organizers expect 70,000 visitors to the event, which is expected to create 1,500 jobs and generate $54 million in revenue as well as providing an opportunity to help Korean emergency equipment manufacturers get international exposure.

``SAFEM Expo will also help the city be recognized as a center for the fire and emergency equipment industry,'' said Kim Kyung-ae, a spokesman for the exposition.

An international conference on fire and disaster prevention will be held during the event.
