More than 2,500 elementary and secondary school students Sunday participated in the sixth English contest hosted by The Korea Times at 11 schools nationwide.
The International English Contest consists of listening and reading comprehension as well as essay writing.
Since its launch in 2006, both students and parents have shown great interest in the contest, seeing it as a good opportunity to grade English proficiency.
The contest is held twice a year, organized by The Korea Times and supported by its sister newspapers ― the Hankook Ilbo, Seoul Economic Daily, Sports Hankook, and Hankook Children's Daily.
The contest is also supported by the U.S. Embassy, the Canadian Embassy, the Canadian Public Education Office, the Australian Embassy, the New Zealand Embassy and the British Council.
Winners get a scholarship to study overseas. Also, they can be named ``Korea Times Junior Reporter'' and have the opportunity to have their articles published in the Learning Times or The Korea Times.
Results of the listening and reading tests will be announced on Sept. 23 and the award ceremony will take place on Sept. 30 at a place to be decided on. The essay test results will be announced on Oct. 17 and the award ceremony will be held on Oct. 24.
