Heavy Downpour Leaves 7 Dead, 5 Missing

Listen

Heavy downpours over the past four days drenched many parts of South Korea, leaving at least seven people dead, five missing and six injured, the National Emergency Management Agency Saturday.

The seven dead included two shamans who had been found dead in Bongwha, North Gyeongsang Province.

The torrential rains also submerged 562 homes across the country, including 135 units in Bongwha, and nearly 1,200 people have been evacuated.

Most of the evacuees returned home but 220 people in 100 households still reside at schools or other shelters because their homes were devastated.

Cumulative precipitation was 376 mm in Dongducheon, 293 mm in Chorwon, 266 mm in Chuncheon and 234 mm in Bongwha. The weather agency lifted all heavy rainfall cautions or warnings across the country.
