Rep. Moon Hee-sang Tuesday won the main opposition Democratic Party (DP)'s election to pick a vice National Assembly speaker.
Four-term lawmaker Moon, 63, defeated his rival Rep. Park Sang-cheon in the race. He served as a senior presidential secretary for political affairs under the former Kim Dae-jung administration and worked for former President Roh Moo-hyun as a presidential chief of staff.
The Assembly members will confirm two vice speaker-nominees ― Rep. Moon of the DP and Rep. Lee Yoon-sung of the ruling Grand National Party (GNP), who became a ruling party's vice speaker-nominee in June ― on Wednesday in the parliament through vote.
The lineup of the assembly leadership consists of one speaker and two vice speakers. Under an inter-party agreement, the ruling party members pick a speaker and one vice speaker, while the largest opposition party elects one vice speaker in a competition.
Rep. Kim Hyong-O was elected the speaker last week through vote.
