The steamy weather is likely to continue through this week with some regions being put under a heat wave alert.
The weather agency Sunday forecast that midday highs this week will range between 30 and 34 degrees Celsius across the peninsula.
``The humid and hot weather is attributed to the fact that the peninsula is under the influence of a North Pacific anticyclone,'' a weatherman from the Korea Metrological Administration said.
He also forecast that the tropical night phenomenon will grip the nation, with morning temperatures staying over 25 degrees Celsius, particularly in southern parts of the country and the east coast.
The weather agency has issued a heat wave alert in some parts of Gangwon Province and other regions in southern parts of the nation. Yangyang in Gangwon Province, in particular, has been put on a heat wave warning.
The alert is issued when midday highs are recorded at 33 degrees Celsius with the heat index soaring to 32 for more than two days in a row. A heat wave warning is given when midday highs are recorded at 35 with the heat index increasing to 41 for more than two days in a row.
The seasonal rain front has been in a momentary lull but heavy rainfalls are expected this week, the weatherman said.
``The sultry heat wave will continue. People are advised to take precautions to stay healthy,'' he said.
