Maj. Gen. Jeffrey A. Remington has been nominated as the top U.S. Air Force commander in South Korea, the U.S. Department of Defense announced Thursday.

Remington, who is currently serving as director of operations, plans, requirements and programs at Pacific Air Force Headquarters, Hawaii, is to replace Lt. Gen. Stephen G. Wood.

Remington will be promoted to lieutenant general with the additional assignment of deputy commander of the United Nations Command, U.S. Forces Korea; commander of the Air Component Command of the Korea-U.S. Combined Forces Command and the 7th Air Force based in Osan, Gyeonggi Province, according to the Pentagon.

The main mission of the 7th Air Force is to deter, protect and defend South Korea from North Korean attack. The command is authorized to plan, direct, and conduct combined air operations on the Korean Peninsula.

The command has two fighter wings here ― the 51st Fighter Wing in Osan Air Base and 8th Fighter Wing in Kunsan Air Base.

Remington, with more than 4,100 flying hours, joined the U.S. Air Force in 1977 as a graduate of the U.S. Air Force Academy, and toured with the U.S. Air Forces in Europe as a demonstration pilot and in a staff position.

He later performed as a solo pilot for the U.S. Air Force Air Demonstration Squadron, the Thunderbirds. Remington also commanded the 80th Fighter Squadron at Kunsan Air Base from May 1994 to April 1995.
